Johnny Cash, American IV: The Man Comes Around
In ill health, knowing he’s in final chapter, Johnny Cash goes into the recording studio with a long list of songs he wants to record. The result is a series of staggeringly powerful performances that pull you in to witness the story of his life. A truly great recording because he’s there right in front of you, demonstrating exactly why he was such a revered artist.

Bach Brandenburg No. 5: The concerto that defined Jazz, Prog-Rock, Metal & even some Pop formats
Просмотров 72 тыс.Месяц назад
300 years ago J.S. Bach wrote a piece of music that would define the structure of music we still adhere to today, especially in the realms of Jazz & Rock. Bach's Brandenburg Concerto No.5 (like the rest of the concertos in the set of six) stands out as something very special. It's long and dramatic solo at the end of the first movement, defined a format that would last for ever, where the band ...

I often find myself being drawn to Class 'A' type amplifiers, but why? Is that logical, or some kind of bias? The entire BWV 1043 is the most beautiful thing I've ever heard...
Amazing video; thank you!!! I would love to see you discuss Wendy Carlos' synthesizer versions of the Brandenburg Concertos. She recorded each one of them in an extremely complex manner which deserves deep analysis as it set the standard for electronic music for decades to come. Wendy Carlos is still alive at the time of this post (Jun-27-2024).
Colin Greee woood (shows Jonny playing bass) 😂❤
Brilliant!
Brilliant LP kind of blue , there’s not a week goes by that I listen to it 😊
A wonderful video which took me back to my childhood and my father. He was a musical purist (although just a civil servant) who worshipped Bach, Beethoven and Schubert. Despite not having much money in the 1950s, and with four kids in tow, he managed (much to my mother's despair) to buy a Garrard 301 complete with its iconic SME arm - I became familiar with so much of his music through this set up (along with a Leak valve amp and home-built Tannoy speakers). In the 1970s he was obviously a bit more affluent and bought the Linn Sondek (my mother probably tore her hair out at this point) which he used until around 1985 when he gave up (old age) and bought, for ease of use, a NAD CD player. He made a gift to me of the old Garrard/SME set up which I used for many years before selling it to a company which renovated high-quality equipment like that. I am now totally digital with a marvellous all-in-one Cyrus job (along with Tannoy XT8Fs) but I still hanker after those wonderful old machines.
I'd pass on all of your preamp suggestions!
That’s interesting, what would be your recommendations, if I may ask?
Sublime, Mr Lovergrone. 🙏🙏 The best performance for me is the Alfa Classics one, by Cafe Zimmerman.
Thanks! And thanks for sharing your preference
Greetings from Belgium! Indeed, I am very curious. Maybe you could send me a photo via email, via our website?
@@PearlAcoustics Harley, eu te enviei um e-mail.
it's ironic that the general public is aware of Brandenburg due to this failed job application. That Margrave totally screwed up!!
😀 but at least we have it! One commenter said that the Margrave was short of money at the time and was cutting back on his orchestra. We complain about the cost of our hifi, imagine how much an entire orchestra costs to keep! 😂
How about a 'budget' version of the Sibelius for us paupers?
I would really like that! It was never my (our) intention to make expensive equipment. Unfortunately, the price is purely the result of adding up the cost of all the hours and materials needed to make a pair. At this moment I have no idea how we could make them cheaper. Unfortunately, the margin we are making is already too small and sooner, or later, we will have to raise our prices. It’s such a shame, but it’s a reality as the skills needed to make the enclosures do not come cheap.
I would have been interested if you had reviewed the Denon A11 SACD that we've had for ages.
Indeed, it was not possible to cover all. I hope you enjoyed the video nonetheless.
I can only imagine how beautiful a pair of Sibelius speakers sound , when they were crafted by someone with the feeling and heartfelt connection to the music that you have. Watching your videos is an emotional experience.
Thank you, you’re very kind
Why do you look like you run Catholic Orphanages for profit.
I was at a record fair the other day and it was full of young people buying LP ,s brilliant it’s definitely not dead 😊
I was skeptical but the Naia breathes more…more expressive…more life.
Please , What is the complete system you've used here ? what amplifier ? Thanks
Hi. The set up was very simple. QUAD Atera play plus cd / preamplifier, connected to a pair of Mingda single-ended class A monoblocks, driving a pair of Pearl Acoustics SG Loudspeakers.
I remember when I first gave Kid A a try it was a little too out there for me to get on board with it. I thought the horn breakdown in The National Anthem was atrocious. But then I gave it another shot and I started to feel the music within my bones. Fast forward to today and I think it's one of the most incredible albums of all time. I can't help but get up and dance to The National Anthem now!
Great music, has the power to continually grow and demand one’s attention.
Great review. Thanks. 🙏
You’re welcome. Thanks for watching
Pass Labs ridiculously overpriced...
Man, you have such good taste in music!!!! I find myself returning to your channel time and time again just for the music, the intro (marvelous), your delivery and of course the reviews. Great work 🎉

You’re welcome!
I’m often shocked when I’m looking for various pieces of used equipment that really expensive and stylish pieces of premium hifi equipment are being sold (or owned) by people who live in very dated and in many cases, completely depressing and deprived environments. It’s not always obvious whether a home is owned or rented, but I often see sleek equipment in homes with dirty, worn, old carpets, dirty walls in magnolia or decades-old colours and very poor and low quality furnishing. The manufacturers are selling a dream, they present these products in sleek homes, but they end up in homes that could be easily transformed by the money spent on the equipment. Even with cars, people don’t seem to have the same level of contrast as with premium hifi products. It’s quite sad that many fall for the claims about pure sound and whatever sleazy cliches the paid hifi propaganda machine puts out.

Analog don't bring out digital but can stereo
Both good in way
Good morning, I really appreciated this comparison, especially the version of "Café Zimmermann by Pablo Valetti". At this point it would also be interesting to compare the recording of the "Freiburger Barockorchester" to the 2014 recording for Harmonia mundi, which according to the CD booklet was made at a very low pitch: A/A=392Hz. With your speakers it should sound great!
Thank you for your kind words. 392 is very low indeed. I will definitely look them up and put them on my coffee time listening list! 🙏
I knew the group name but never really listened to them. Quite interesting and looking forward to discover Radiohead. A bit surprised that you like such music but at the same time open minded people often go off the beaten tracks. Well done sir.
Thank you! Enjoy!
Thanks for that insightful comparative review, Harley. I wonder what you (would) think of the Sugden Sapphire FBA 800 power amp. Whilst not such a behemoth as the SPA-4, it still puts out 40 WPC in Class A and its innovative design and the resulting performance figures suggest it would address your concerns about the relatively higher noise floor of the A21SE, upon which I believe it is based. Perhaps you might be able to favour us with a review including that model, please. Keep up the great work.
Hi thanks for sharing your appreciation. I forwarded your comment to my local Sugden distributor and he very kindly agreed to lend me one. So the next step, over the Summer break, will be to extensively test it and see if it is worthy of a review… if you reply here in August, I will let you know how I am getting on 😉
@@PearlAcoustics Will do, Harley, thank you so much.
It's a bit of a hobby horse of mine that despite all the contemporary focus on the environment and recycling nothing's made to last; from cars, to HiFi and all other electrical goods. Everything is considered disposable and has built-in obsolescence so when, for instance; your recently purchased £10 toaster fails all the chassis and workings go into landfill as it's a sealed, moulded unit with no serviceable parts inside. Back in the day a toaster might have cost twice or three times that but if (when!) the element failed it could be unscrewed, a new one fitted and you'd be set to go for another bunch of years. The latest pollutant horror is set to be electric cars and their sealed batteries which, again, seem to be set to go straight to the dump as when their batteries inevitably fail after half a dozen years or so the spares cost more (fiscally and ecologically!) than the residual value of the vehicle so the whole thing; body-shell, trim, suspension etc., most of which would still be perfectly serviceable, is wasted
Hi, I totally understand your frustration. Hence our design philosophy to buck the trend. Personally I don’t mind sealed units (prevents people from fiddling with them) as long as the sealed units are designed to work indefinitely, with no dependencies on very specific formats. For example, a Bluetooth loudspeaker could very well last a very long time, but when Bluetooth is no longer an available technology, many perfectly good units will have to be thrown away or put in museums!
If you like this, I highly reccomend VH1 Storytellers: Johnny Cash & Willie Nelson. It's just them and their guitars telling stories, and playing their hits, including one or two from The Highwaymen.
Oh thanks for this very interesting tip!
Sir Andras Schiff interprets this piece beautifully.
Indeed, a great pianist.
Quit talking with your hands.Very annoying.
Ich habe alle Platten aus dieser Serie. Diese ist die beste! „Hurt“ ist ein Meisterwerk und ich bekomme jedesmal Gänsehaut, wenn ich diesen Song höre. Danke für dieses Video, dear Harley!
You’re very welcome. Glad you enjoyed it. The whole collection must be a nice thing to own.
This is really an eye (ear) opener for me. Again, a great review of an album I would never have picked personally, but now am very inspired to have a listed on my Sibelius pair. Thank you again Harley for such a splendid video. There are, for me, no better reviews to be found on RUclips then yours. Especially going out of you comfort zone and finding the beauty in this Johnny Cash album is utterly amazing. Do not change anything about the way of you review and keep them coming forever! Thank you. 🙏
Wow, thank you Bob! I will do my best to keep making them. I am having a little break in July but will be back later in the Summer!
I have been listening to Bach since I was a child (thanks, Dad!). I have listened to many versions since (I'm almost 68 now). Each adds a bit of insight into what Bach REALLY meant. In any case, a rose by any other name...
Thanks for your comment. Indeed, I find that even when I listen to versions that at first I don’t like. At the very least they help me challenge my existing prejudices and even sometimes help you to find more in the work
Many people do not understand Kid A. But those who do can really marvel in its beauty and brilliance
Absolutely. Sometimes the great works of art take an effort from the listener or observer, and once invested, their lives are inevitably enriched in some way.
When he started at 600 Euros I knew I had to look elsewhere for buying advice. 😕
Sorry, but preamplifiers are complex things and I only want to discuss products that can be considered as investments, ie that should have a very long working lifespan. However, I am very curious… what preamplifiers might you be looking at under 600EUR (I am assuming new pieces of equipment)?
@@PearlAcoustics ATM I am trying to figure out how to properly match a preamp to a power amp-that is why I clicked on your video. My Yamaha AX-930 integrated amp died recently, so I am now moving to separates. I will likely pick up a Crown Audio power amp (XLI 1500 possibly)--great bang for the buck! Re preamps, I have considered a used Nikko Beta II, a small tube preamp, or even a Soundcraft sound mixer. Not sure if any of those would allow the Crown function to it's full potential--just looking to enhance sound quality. A preamp is not strictly needed. Not all music enthusiasts have the extra $$ sitting around to buy the level of gear you are reviewing. Thanks for asking--I did enjoy the video.
@@DiGiTaLdAzEDM Hi, thanks for your reply. Indeed, not everyone has the budgets I calculate for my videos. Thank goodness for secondhand. I’ve been down that route many a time. In fact I used to always but my gear secondhand when I was younger. A small tube pre-amplifier is always a nice thing to own. Even consider buying a kit one day…. Good luck in your hifi journey. Thanks for your kind interest in my videos, Best wishes Harley
Thank you Harley, I was given this album as a "Secret Santa" present in 2006 and it started a reappraisal of the way I thought about Jonny Cash, along with the amazing film "Walk The Line" (In my opinion Reese Witharspoon's most elegant film performance) and it is "Hurt" that is the stand out song on this amazing album. I did listen to the "9 inch nails" version but as you mentioned the song now belongs to "The Man in Black". Wonderful review, especially the musical insights you provide to the album., very similar to a BBC podcast "Add to Playlist" which takes musical links from song to song and adds a technical appraisal as you did here so well. Maybe yo should be a guest on that show one day 😁. Thanks again, do keep up the wonderful work you do entertaining and educating us all.
Thank you very much for your very kind words and personal addition to the conversation. I don’t know the BBC’s “Add to play list” sounds intriguing. Thanks for the tip!
In the over 60 years of listening to music all of the American Recordings of Johnny Cash stand in the best I've heard. Thanks for letting your family know what I believe to be music for the soul! Bravo
Thanks!
I believe he made six American Recordings. Brilliant storytelling.
Thank you!
I really enjoy your videos, they are very informative and entertaining at the same time. Always looking forward to the next episode. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experiences with us. Cheers from Canada.

My introduction to a Sugden 25a I think that's the model was in a shop being a small repair. We listened to it over and over and we're hoping that the owner would be delighted in that we found the problem in the amplifier's preamplifier section.
This album was my introduction to Johnny Cash. My favourite song of his is "Man in Black" - a haunting song and a powerful sentiment. And I agree, the recordings have a minimalist immediacy to them which gives them a spooky presence. Enjoy your summer break :)
Thanks Adam!
Watching you listening, man, I am right there with you. Tears, joy. You are preserving Western Civilization. I hear God speaking through Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, and . . . Nina Simone and Johnny Cash.
Wow, thank you
bits is bits.
Harley, such a nice observation about the lovely spareness of the guitar on many of these tracks. To me, Cash masterfully uses it as crutch for his beautifully aging voice in a way that exceed the sum of its parts.
Thanks. And thanks for developing the idea in your comment
Love these videos! Would like to see you tackle Schubert’s String Quintet in a similar manner. Thanks!!
Thanks! I am sure I will one day!
Exceptional video, I thought I would watch a few minutes of it, being 4:30 am for me, and here I’m wanting more songs and of this remarkable review! It’s my favorite Cash’s album, actually, the only one have on vinyl. I love the song Personal Jesus, incredible sound and performance. I hope you would listen to Doc Watson’s Southbound, Cisco records released a version of it that sounds amazing and it reminds me of Cash’s music. Thank you very much for such a personal share!
You’re very welcome. Thank you. And thanks too for the tip!
I was thrilled to see him,his wife June, and family in Seattle Washington 1976. He did this for his good friend Billy Graham. I so agree his singing is a spoken style. Thx for the Memories, because of this .
